PILATES TEACHER TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION

For individuals interested in becoming teachers of the Pilates Method of physical and mental conditioning, Pilates of Boulder, Inc. offers a comprehensive course in teacher training leading to certification. Pilates of Boulder, Inc. is registered with the Pilates Method Alliance as a Teacher Training/Educational Organization, and meets or exceeds all PMA requirements for Teacher Training. The curriculum includes the complete classical repertoire of Joseph and Clara Pilates and a great range in the logical creative extensions of their work.

COMPREHENSIVE PILATES TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM

Entrance Requirement:  The prerequisite for entering Full Teacher Certification Training is a demonstrated proficiency in Levels 1 to 4. Pilates of Boulder will evaluate previous education and training, when applicable, this will apply as pre-certification training.   Students of the Pilates Method who feel they have reached this degree of mastery in their training may take an examination. For others who are not sufficiently advanced in their work, the Pre-Certification Training Program is required.  Individual Teacher Training Programs are now available with flexible start dates to fit your life. I. The Formal Lecture Series: The exercises are presented in five levels of difficulty. The student must gain mastery in all five levels and learn the language, cues and techniques needed to teach each exercise at each level to others. For each movement, the student must learn the equipment set up, physical orientation, purpose of exercise, muscles trained, prerequisite skills, cautions and safety considerations. (60 hours of Lecture Theory & 80 hours of Lecture Lab)

 

II. The Internship:  Case-work, or practice teaching hours, is also required as part of the program.  The Internship is invaluable, acting as a primer for all real-life situations. The Internship can be started before you begin, during, or after finishing a Formal Lecture Series Cycle.  80 hours of teaching are required for graduation.

 

III. Observation Time: The student observes full instructors giving private lessons or teaching classes. 40 hours required.

 

IV. Advanced Practical Training: Individual technique practice . (100 hours of non-Lecture Lab. not included in Sec. I). This time is supervised by Pilates of Boulder Faculty, if performed at POB.

 

V. Human Anatomy: A working knowledge of the muscular and skeletal systems is taught during the Lecture/Lab Series, plus 10 hours of Formal Lecture in Anatomy and Kinesiology. For students interested in learning Pilates as physical rehabilitation and working with insurance claims, college level anatomy and physiology is necessary. Continuing Education in rehabilitation is available through Pilates of Boulder (Time included in Sec. I)

 

VI. Reading: Students must read Return to Life by Joseph Pilates, 2003.

Recommended Reading:  Germain, Blandine C., Anatomy of Movement, 1993; Fitness Professionals' Guide to MUSCULOSKELETAL ANATOMY and HUMAN MOVEMENT by Lawrence A. Golding and Scott M. Golding (Not included in tuition fee)

 

VII. Journal: Students should keep an accurate journal of their entire course of training.

 

Minimum Weekly Time Commitment (not necessarily all in the same week)

Formal Lecture Series (Two 1-hour Lecture sessions per week, for duration of course). Throughout the program, 5 hours (suggested not required) hours of observation, assisting teaching and self-practice are required weekly at your home studio.

 

Individual Teacher Training Programs are now available with flexible start dates to fit your life.  These sessions will be scheduled with each course group at the beginning of the course. Holiday exceptions: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day,  Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Final Exams

 

The POB Instructor Course includes a four-part Final Exam that must be passed for Certification. Written Examination or Oral Boards.

2.       Comprehensive Performance Test (all Apparatus and Mat Work)

3.       Teaching Proficiency

4.            Written Examination or Oral Boards

5.       Passing score of 85% or higher on all exams

(Practice Review and Testing: 40 hours approx.)

 

Course fee:  $5,200.00. Total time commitment: ~9 months. First 7-8 months are the lecture series. The last month is for the Final Examination and Graduation. Internship hours may take longer than 9 mos.

 

Registration fee:  $50.00 (non-refundable) Not included in course fee.

 

Studio Usage Fee: At the end of 9 months from start date, there will be a studio usage fee (leave of absences extend this period) for internship and practical training.   Fee: $60.00/mo.

Course covers:

 

  • Introductory Mat:  10 hours
  • Intermediate Mat; 10 hours
  • Full (Advanced) Mat: 10 hours
  • Human Anatomy: 5 hours
  • Practice Review & Testing:  5 hours
  • Every exercise of the full mat sequence, so student can perform all exercises from beginner level to super advanced.
  • Provides in-depth instruction on how to teach at all levels of difficulty & all body types. Develop skills necessary to be a safe, effective and inspiring teacher.
  • Provide applications for injury rehabilitation, modifications for all levels of ability, and safety issues. Course length: 40 hours (approx. 3 mos.).

 

Final Exam: Comprehensive Performance Test (Full Mat Work), Teaching Proficiency.  Passing score of 85% or higher on all exams

 

Course fee: $1,900.Total time commitment: ~3.0 months. The last week is for the Final Examination and Graduation.

 

Registration fee:  $50.00 (non-refundable) Not included in course fee.

PRE-CERTIFICATION TRAINING

 

The prerequisite for entering Full Teacher Certification Training is a demonstrated proficiency in Levels 1 to 4. Students of the Pilates Method who feel they have reached this degree of mastery in their training may take an examination. For others who are not sufficiently advanced in their work, the Pre-Certification Training Program is required.

This program is designed to bring the student to Level 4 proficiency within a concise period of time. The advanced and super advanced exercises (Levels 4 and 5) must be mastered during the Lecture Series in Teacher Certification Training.

 

During each week of Pre-Certification Training the student must take:

 

 One – 1 hour private per week (4 times each month) Total: 4 privates each month!

*    One mat class (one hour) (4 times each month): Total: 4/month

*    One group class (one hour) (4 times each month) Total: 4/month

 

*    Independent work-out/s (once a week – suggested)

*    One observation (one hour each week – suggested)

 

Students must read Return to Life by Joseph Pilates (2003) (Not included in tuition fee) and keep an accurate journal of their training. Students are invited to practice at the studio on their own, at no additional cost. A POB instructor must be present. By appointment.

 

A mid-term and final examination will be conducted by POB Director, Richard Rossiter, with other instructors. These examinations must be passed to enter the Certification Program.

 

Month-to-Month option (Total hours/mo.: 12 hours.  Fees: $400/mo.
